WGIN Award 2023
-Taiwan nomination-
Category 1A: Built Environment- Green Roof
Project Title: Garden of Luxury, Rooftop of The library of Kaohsiung Medical University
Project completion year: 2017
Project Location: Kaohsiung City, Taiwan
Project Type: Retrofit Green Roof
Green Roof Type: Extensive & Intensive
Total vegetated roof area: 634M²
Project feature:
-
This project responds to Kaohsiung City Government's policy promoting green roofs and combines the expertise of the school's pharmacy professionals to continue the traditional Chinese medicine philosophy of "food and medicine sharing the same origin" by creating a healthy herb and vegetable garden. The design incorporates concepts of environmental-friendly recycled building materials, insulation, storage and drainage systems, and multi-functional activity spaces to create a green space on campus, reduce carbon footprint, and provide a versatile space for teaching, research, horticultural therapy, and community activities.
-
There are 40 plants in this rooftop greening including medicinal and edible plants. There are also many vegetable boxes placed to provide seasonal vegetables by growing short-term vegetables according to the season and actual needs. After one year, the diversity was observed due to the variety of habitats and plants. And the biodiversity is consistent until today when the butterflies, bees, ladybugs, earthworms, sparrows, black-crowned sparrows, pigeons, night herons, etc., were observed. This Garden not only provided a great urban ecosystem but also achieved the goal of SDGs13 to cope with climate change.
-
The project uses lightweight materials and insulation systems, such as insulated drainage boards and lightweight substrates, to reduce building weight and solar radiation. An automatic irrigation system is also installed to conserve water and reduce the burden of maintenance.
-
This roof greening could block the heat of sunlight through the insulation drainage board. The vegetation offsets the solar radiation and reduces the heat island effect effectively, thereby reducing the temperature of the building surface. Therefore, the temperature on the rooftop surface of this library building is 2-5% lower than that before construction, which reduces the electrical power consumption of cooling and heating by about 20%
-
This project not only increases green space on campus but also provides space for school events, cultural and artistic exhibitions, and staff rest areas. It is open to the community and the seniors for social interaction and horticultural activities, which can improve physical and mental health, and promote environmental awareness, and community development.
