Officially called the Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory, most Milwaukeeans refer to the beautiful botanical attraction as simply "The Domes." A popular place for weddings, events, and a great visit for tourists, the Domes are a fun, peaceful place to spend an afternoon. Visitors encounter three distinct climates in the domes: a desert climate, tropical climate, and the third is the Floral Show dome, features rotating seasonal floral displays.
The enormous geodesic hemispheres of Milwaukee County?s Mitchell Park Horticultural Conservatory ?Domes? are iconic structures for the regional plant-loving community. Beneath each dome are unique ecological habitats, now connected from above by a 1210 sf roof top field of mixed Sedum species using the Xero Flor XF301 vegetation mat.
The lightweight green roof assembly serves as an educational reference for park visitors, while prolonging the roof?s performance life and supporting the county?s goals for stormwater runoff management and urban heat island reduction.
Because the roof is not accessible to the public, an educational kiosk will be constructed inside the building to explain the green roof creation and its associated benefits.
